Emily + James :: Together

We met Emily in December at a ‘party’ ;) for a group of young women who share friendship, fun, laughter and an unbreakable bond of support for each other while their husbands are deployed. I’ve so enjoyed getting to know Emily – she is bright and beautiful – a high achiever. Her friends tease about her title “Dr. Bradshaw” – yep, she has already earned a doctorate degree in the field of physical therapy, and I swear she gets as much accomplished before 7:30 am than I sometimes manage to pull off in an entire day! But what strikes me most when I think about Emily is her undeniable devotion to her husband, James, and her amazingly positive attitude. I see her facebook posts – often mentioning happenings that might make the rest of us grumble or complain, but Emily never fails to find the positive spin. I am sure I am not the first friend to compare her to Snow White ;-D

So, when we learned that James would soon be arriving home for R&R, we did some scheming with Emily and arranged to meet them for a photo session to celebrate their time together. We met Emily, James and their four-legged ’son’, Gunner, at Pt. Defiance Park for some playtime on a gorgeous spring day :) Talk about two people that were absolutely made for each other!! There is a quiet, yet at the same time – very powerful – strength to their relationship. Take a look at this little video we created using images from our time and the park and I think you’ll see it too :) Knowing that they took some time to go see George Strait in concert while James was home, we hope the music we chose to go with their photos will lift them both up with happy memories of their time together :)

And here are a few of our fav’s from the day:

I am sure that two weeks never go by quite as quickly as when couples are sharing R&R together…sigh…James is already back in the Middle East and Emily has gone back to her without-James-daily-routine.

Emily & James – we are honored to know you – here’s hoping that the rest of James’ deployment passes swiftly and safely for you both. And straight from our hearts, please accept our prayers, support and gratitude for the sacrifices you both so willingly make on behalf of us and our entire country, in order to protect the freedoms we enjoy as US citizens.

Seventeen Hundred Reasons

Thursday, April 12, 2001 was the day I learned I was battling cancer. I was a single mom, in my 30’s and was in my third month of unemployment after a layoff. The day actually started out great – a few days earlier I’d accepted an offer for a new job – a cut in responsibility and pay, but the proverbial ‘foot in the door’. My kids were on spring break, so we’d decided to celebrate in one of our favorite ways – driving to the coast for an afternoon picnic on the beach. Feeling fine, I breezed out the door with the promise that I just had this quick check in with my surgeon – to make sure my incisions were healing well and likely remove sutures – and then I’d get back home, pack our lunch and we’d be off for a day of sand, water, and if we were lucky, maybe even a little sunshine. :) After all, the biopsy had been more of a precaution – just a measure to rule out any worries, as my symptoms were not typically associated with cancer and I was healthy, fit, and considered ‘too young’ for breast cancer – “odds are 1 in 10,000,” had been the surgeon’s words.

Well, as you can likely guess, the appointment turned into more than I’d expected – much more – as I learned this day would bring the most dreaded moment I’d ever face – having to go home and tell my three children, “I have cancer.” But, that grueling task and its emotional fallout; and the loss of body parts that seemed so directly connected to my womanhood, and recovery, treatment, follow-up surgeries – those are all stories for another day.

Today I’ve promised to tell you the reason – the ‘1700 reasons’ Bill and I arrived at $1700 as our starting point in the auction of our photography services for your wedding, and why we hope you’ll consider bidding to receive them. After reading that little ‘intro’ to my cancer story, I’m sure you can see why Sharlane’s story has touched me in such a personal way. A single mom, while not “un” employed, Sharlane is self-employed – so her situation is basically the same as mine was – to step away from work to fight her cancer means no income to continue to support herself and her sweet little girl. Make no mistake – cancer COSTS. We all can relate to the emotional and physical costs – but with or without medical insurance, and in addition to the resulting lack of income, fighting cancer costs alot of dollars, too.

Less than four weeks after my bi-lateral (double) mastectomies, and against the wishes of my doctor (typical recovery time was a minimum of six weeks), I caved to pressure from my new supervisor and started my job. I was only able to work half time for the first several weeks. So – significant cut in pay plus a half-time schedule….you get it…not alot of physical or financial resources to support my family of four. That wasn’t all – employment policy on the new job prevented me from using any sick leave benefits until I had worked full time for six months – so – add several dr visits per week into the mix, as well as seven weeks of daily radiation treatments … every dr visit, every radiation treatment – was unpaid leave. Then there was the issue of the change to new medical insurance – including all new deductibles to satisfy out of my own pocket, and it seemed like, no matter how many times I called and provided the new info, it never reached the hands of the person filing claims…which resulted in tangled stacks of unpaid bills and denied claims. I got to the point of not wanting to answer my telephone as there was always some collection person on the other end saying something like, “we’ve billed your insurance company twice and they have denied the claims – your bill is now past due, and for the week of x-date to x-date, you owe us $21,700 for radiation oncology.” ….and on and on it went. Yes, cancer costs – and it doesn’t wait till you’re back on your feet, or through with treatment, or fully recovered… Yes, eventually those situations were resolved, but the constant threats to my credit, along with my at best ‘limping’ income, took their toll. Please know – I know that I am lucky – no chemo, lots of loving friends and family, and I won the battle – these are facts that make me grateful every day. But these details I’m sharing are real – and no matter how hard you are battling, or how exhausted you might be, or how much you wish you could give what little energy you have to your family instead of worries about money – they rear their ugly heads and demand that you deal with them. Cancer costs….and the light bill, grocery bills and rent still come due.payitforward-2s1

A Gift from an Angel

So, there I sat on my front porch one afternoon, after months of scrambling and juggling to try to cover all my financial bases. I’d been a good girl and had the recommended rainy day savings account, but the months of unemployment followed by the cancer battle had burned through every cent. On this day, I was facing a new grueling task – my rent was due and for the first time ever in my life, I was going to have to call the landlord and tell him I wasn’t able to pay. I felt so defeated – my goal, in addition to survival – and reassuring/restoring confidence in my children that their mom wasn’t going anywhere – had been to come through this battle with grace and dignity. The phone call looming over my head did not feel graceful or dignified, and I wasn’t sure what I would do if I couldn’t afford to rent a house for my kids and me. I sat outside, knowing that as soon as I went inside, I needed to take the responsible step and make that call….I realized, “Hey, I haven’t gotten the mail yet today – there’s one more reason to stall another minute or two….”

As I walked back toward the house from the mailbox, I went through the stack of ‘usual’ mail – bills of course, junk adds, and then I came to a 5×7 manilla envelope. It was lumpy, ya know, like it contained more than a card or letter; my name and address were handwritten on it and there was no return address. I opened it and found a card – on the front was a photograph that anyone living in our area would recognize – it was the old brewhouse – the original brick building, full of old-time character, on the land that eventually became the home to the Olympia Brewery. Inside was a handwritten message from an angel:

“Dear Ms Wheeler-

Please receive this gift as an encouragement and as an expression of God’s love and provision for you. The prompting to give this came in a time of prayer. Receive it and use it where you have need. Who do you thank? Give thanks to Him who is our maker.

You may have occasion to be a vehicle of giving to others in the years to come.

I believe you will.

You are greatly loved by the Father of Creation.”

There was no signature.

With chills running through my whole body and my heart pounding, I looked inside the manilla envelope again and found two smaller envelopes – I pulled them out to find that each of them contained a stack of 5’s, 10’s and 20’s – in all, $1,700….$1,700!! Enough to pay rent, buy groceries and catch up on a few other bills – $1700 – enough to know that I would scrape by, and be able to make it through a few more weeks of short paychecks until treatment was over and I’d be mostly able to work full time. $1700 – a gift of relief, a gift of confidence that I would win this battle with cancer, a gift of the ability to support my family. I studied the handwriting for days, weeks, months, years – it was unique and I have memorized what it looks like – always watching to see if I can spot the same writing from anyone whose path crosses mine. So far, the identity of my angel is still a secret – as much as I would love to thank that person, part of me is glad that I haven’t solved the mystery – as obviously it was my angel’s desire to remain anonymous.

Today is the first time I have actually pushed myself to put pen to paper – or fingers to keyboard – about my cancer, or about the story of this amazing gift. As I write, I’m realizing that – as much as I’ve worked to be the “vehicle of giving”, as my angel wrote – in the back of my mind I was afraid that letting go of how closely and privately I held this story would mean letting go of the confidence it bestowed. But that was not true. Today I realize that I was just waiting for the right time to share it. Today is a good day – make that a GREAT day – today I am excited because, like my angel said he/she knew I would, today is the day I get to pay it forward – I can’t tell you how much I have been looking forward to this day. Today my heart is overflowing with even more appreciation for my angel, because today I am receiving yet another gift from him/her – the chance to help someone who is in the same situation I was.

Rachael + Brandon :: Together

Even though Rachael and Brandon have known each other since high school, it wasn’t until just a couple of years ago that they decided just how deep their feelings really were.  As often happens, Rachael & Brandon’s first date left them breathless and with hearts fluttering – but not for the ‘typical’ reasons – turns out they spent that memorable evening chasing each other around in a serious game of laser tag ;)

For a while, life kept them at a distance – Rachael lived in Portland and Brandon was stationed at Fort Lewis.  But over the next several months this highly active romance continued – they were married last March, just a few short months before Brandon was deployed to Afghanistan.

We had the good fortune of getting to know Rachael earlier this year – in her role as ‘marketing & events whiz’ for South Sound Wedding & Event Magazine.  With her upbeat personality and sincere nature she’s not only great at her job, but just plain fun to be around.  When we heard that she was out of the office to make the most of Brandon’s short visit home from the Middle East,  we invited the two of them to meet us in downtown Tacoma – so that we could help them to create some keepsake images of this time together.

There is no denying the love these two share – take a look at this video Bill created from our shoot and you’ll see what I mean :

As we were walking across the bridge, some tourists asked Brandon if he would use their camera to snap a shot of the three of them – then they offered to return the favor for us :)

Today is sure to be a rough one for both of them – Brandon shipped out this morning for 9 more months overseas.  Rachael and Brandon – thank you for sharing some of your precious moments together with us – we are honored by the privilege.  Our thoughts and prayers are with both of you – for comfort while you’re separated, for safety and a happy reunion, and in thanks and appreciation for the sacrifices you both make as a military family, to safeguard our country and the abundance of freedom we all share.

Andy & Jenn :: a reunion

We became friends with Andy and Jenn during their fun couples’ session last spring. A true story of star-crossed love… even though fate – and the US Army – had placed both of them in Italy for several months, they hadn’t managed to meet each other….so fate stepped up the game and brought them face to face on the same bus as they both arrived at Fort Lewis, WA.

This shot is from that springtime session – such great sports – Mother Nature hurled a full-on squall at us that day, but Andy & Jenn were undaunted :) 050209_andy_jenn

Fast forward to last week -  thanks to the awesomeness that is Facebook we’ve been able to keep in touch with them, even while Jenn was deployed to Iraq….sooooo – we were pumped when Andy let us have some sneaky fun by ‘hiding out’ at SeaTac last week to capture their happy reunion when Jenn returned for R&R …. so cute…we were supposed to meet Andy at 12:15 – this pic was taken as he was admitting that he was so excited to see Jenn, he’d arrived at the airport hours earlier :)

…that Andy is so smooth – he managed to sweet talk the counter agent into giving us passes so we could be waiting at the gate when Jenn got off the plane.

Have I told you how much I LOVE what we get to do for work – so lucky to get to be there to create a visual record of such meaningful moments in our friends/clients lives!

Bill put this little vid together with the pics we got of their reunion – and Andy & Jenn – be sure to check out the credits at the end – he chose the music esp for you ;-D

Shhhh…don’t tell anyone, but we heard a rumor that plans are in the works to make their powerful connection ‘official’ at some point in the future ;-) Cheers to that – and to both of you, Andy & Jenn – and thanks for letting us play storytellers of your romance!

Sunset :: Grassy beach and great colors

A few nights ago I went down to the beach at sunset armed with a tripod and a camera bag – I was rewarded with some beautiful colors in the sky.

Enjoy.

Mason County Rodeo – 2009

What’s more fun than having a beer and watching some bull riding?  How about jumping in the arena and taking pictures? ;-)

For the last 3 years I’ve been shooting the Mason County Rodeo and licensing pictures to them for their website and print advertising.

Here’s a slideshow with a video introduction by your’s truly:

Mountain Biking in Whistler BC

My friend Colin Michael invited me to come to Whistler, BC for 3 days of downhill mountain biking.  What a blast!

Here’s me at the top, the bikes we rented are Specialized Demo 8 downhill bikes – what an amazing machine.  I don’t think I’ll ever buy one, they cost over $5k and would be a bear to ride uphill, but nothing could be better for the big jumps and drops at Whistler.

whistler-me

Here’s an iPhone video of Colin hitting the practice jumps, I wish we had video of some of the real jumps and drops, but it’s hard to get – other than these practice jumps you’re not allowed to ride or hike back up a trail to do something over – it’s too dangerous for you and the other riders coming through.

Here’s a couple pictures we took with my real camera – (I’m lifting them straight off Colin’s blog). It was a little crazy riding with a several pound and several thousand dollar camera flopping around – and it got so muddy I had to clean every crevice of it with a toothbrush when I got home….  But it was worth it. :)

Colin riding up the Gondola – it was a lot warmer and drier way to get to the top than taking the chairlift.

Me taking a drop at the bottom of the run.  Colin then had to follow me with the camera – he was a little worried about breaking it – or landing on it and breaking ribs..

On some of these jumps I think he was getting 6 or 7 feet of air – I was a little more conservative, but not much…. yeehaw!!

Body armour -  very important – the crash that broke Colin’s kneepad would have been a huge injury without the pad.

I can’t thank Colin enough for inviting me – that was a blast!

iPhone video post – Riding the stairs @ St Ed’s

The new iphone is amazing – so much faster than the old one!  And with the new video feature and youtube intergration it’s going to be easy to make little videos and post them.  Like this one that Jeff Cook took of me riding my bike down the stairs at St Edwards State Park in Kenmore, WA – we were there for a day of mountain biking and beer tasting – fun fun!

A lot less hair

It was time for a change – a hairstyle change that is.

Erin took a couple pictures of me today after I got back from the L Hair Studio (thanks Cheryl!).

Dave and Shawnia’s wedding at the Bozarth Mansion in Spokane

Normally we post weddings on the mOde wedding blog – but this wasn’t a normal wedding for us,  not at all…. Instead of photographing, I was the best man. (yup, I gave a speech and everything…) ;-)

Dave and I have been friends for way more years than I can count on my fingers – and I’m so dang happy that he and Shawnia found each other – they fit like peanut butter and jelly.

Erin and I drove over to Spokane on Friday morning, the day before the wedding – she jumped right in and helped Shanwnia and the other girls out with the flower preparations while I did my best man duties (ie, hanging out with Dave).

We had a casual and fun rehearsal in the back yard – :)

Hey – that’s me!

After the rehearsal we were treated to a wonderful dinner at Twigs Bistro and Martini Bar.

We sat with Gabe and Boone, friends and excellent photographers.

The morning of the wedding Shawnia headed to the salon – Dave, Erin, Gabe and I headed to breakfast – it was good – in fact we ate SO good all weekend!

Dave ate his breakfast so fast I couldn’t get a picture of it… ;-)

Dave dressing his brother Jeff (lol)

Having the traditional ‘guy’s toast’ – Dave chose Mike’s Hard Lime for the occasion.

Erin and I were busy enjoying ourselves all day instead of taking pictures – so lets skip right to the end of the night… They were picked up by a super cool old car – doesn’t it look like it belongs there??

Here they are coming out – a beautiful end to a beautiful day!

Sunday morning we all met at the Davenport Hotel for the most amazing Sunday Brunch I’ve ever seen!  Great choice.

I had to include this next picture – don’t ask why – I just did.

OK – this was why – haha!

Erin took this shot of me signing the marriage license – it’s official!

I hope you guys are having the most amazing time in the Cook Islands!!!

If you want to see more pictures of the day head on over to Gabe & Boone’s slideshow here. ;-)
